Donations benefit food bank, rescue mission
Madera residents pounded through the Speedway track and around the Madera District Fairgrounds during the first ever Second Wind 5K, which raised nearly $17,000 for two local charities.
Organizers of the 3.1-mile run and walk, publicized through social media and flyers around town, expected 150 participants, but were pleasantly surprised to hand out more than twice as many bibs.
The money raised will help the Madera Rescue Mission and the Madera County Food Bank. Staff from both organizations helped during the event.
“Madera was ready for this,” said Mike Unger, the executive director of the Madera Rescue Mission. “I think Madera was long overdue for something like this. Just to see the enthusiasm makes me want to do another one tomorrow.”…
