Pascua-Yaqui history, culture to be showcased

Taught ancestral customs by her father, one Native American in her golden years continues to teach her children — including grand and great — what the Pascua Yaqui tribe is all about.

Mary Rios also wants to tell the community who the Pascua Yaqui people are, their history, their struggles and achievements and the direction they’re taking. The Fresno resident plans to show regalia and artifacts used by the Yaquis — a federally recognized tribe settled in southern Arizona and northern Mexico — during the 18th annual Interfaith/Intercultural Celebration on Jan. 23.

The gathering, set to run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., will include a variety of ethnic foods, cultural exhibits, faith displays, arts and crafts, music and dance as well as performance art. It is organized by the Madera Coalition for Community Justice to celebrate the many diverse religious, ethnic and cultural traditions in Madera. It focuses on those celebrated during this season, according to Carlos Anderson, organizer and outreach coordinator for the coalition.
