Missing your dog after the Fourth of July fireworks? Make sure to check the county animal shelter, and do it quickly.
Each year dogs panic at unfamiliar sounds and bolt out of yards, becoming separated from their owners. The ones that are found flood animal shelters.
Kirsten Gross, director of the Madera County Animal Shelter, said it is a sad but predictable occurrence each year.
“It was a busy weekend with a lot of animals coming in. We were inundated on Saturday with dogs, and with people looking for their lost dogs,” Gross said. “We have gotten 20 to 30 more dogs (per day) than usual, with most of those probably being lost from the fireworks activity.” ...
